The Hassle of Moving Utilities

While most of what we do is gallivant around for fun and just use someone else’s stuff, running here and there on a whim, there are some real hassles. Doing this furnished housing coming and going has taught us a few things. I have become somewhat of a master at packing boxes creatively. I can tell you how to dole out shampoo and kitchen spices for 6 to 12 months with no leftovers. I can separate seasons of clothes better than ever. That stuff is a breeze. The least fun part has to be the cable, internet, electric, and gas billing.

You can’t just call up and pay for 6 months and be done. I wish. You can’t transfer because it’s a different company everwhere. MK needs a ton of security to work, so we’ve gotten two internet connections in most places. We got a COLLECTION LETTER last week – totally in error- please, for a bill we didn’t owe. And that information is so two houses ago. So it can be a hassle. We do our best and keep extensive files everywhere just in case problems like that come up. I just can’t stand dealing with the 1-800 numbers, the hold music, the passwords, the arguments.

MK dealt effectively with it and showed them who was boss. But dude, it has to be my biggest complaint to get all that stuff shut off in one place on the right date and set up in another on the right date. It never gets any easier!

Tax Drama

MK is a procrastinator. A big one. Many of you know this about him. What you might not know – and what I didn’t know until we were married- was just how bad.

For example, there is an unopened TurboTax CD sitting on his desk right now. Before I got married my daddy did my taxes in January for me right when I got my W2 and sent it to him so I could get that money back for whatever car repair or rent that came up right when I was low on cash. But it got done. Early.

So I couldn’t comprehend the first April 15th I spent with MK, where he stayed up until nearly midnight and had to find the last open post office to get a postmark in time. And the year after that, even with me suggesting we get an early start, the same results. That was a frustrating time. He doesn’t like to be forced in to things. He’ll put it off until he can’t possibly do it in time, then does it. The taxes always get done (and well).

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like I could do our taxes, never mind quickly. This guy has the hardest job for taxes on the planet, but he’s mastered it in the last ten years. Well, the last ten April 14th and 15ths. While I hide under the covers and eat crackers. It makes him a little crazy. Then we can’t spend money for like a month, the more I think about it the more worked up I get over the craziness…

So I’m over it. I’ve taken a step back, told TB I’ll be on her couch to avoid the whirlwind of looking for stamps and getting to the post office on time. Stay out of the path of the last minute filer, that’s SGS’s advice.

I’m Asking The Question(s)

The interaction we have on this site is my favorite, more than telling you about my day, or making you look at pictures of me, or making lists for you. So I’m going to try to force a little on you and see if it works. I want all of you, even the ones who aren’t regular commentors (make up a name if you’re shy, no one has to know) to answer my question in the comments.

Let’s say that you get stopped on the street and offered 100$ to write a quick informational article about anything, simply based on your own knowledge. “Write what you know”.

What topic* would you pick that you’d consider yourself most expert on?

If you are a stay at home mom parenting articles should come naturally to you. If you are a home school parent you know that is a full time job and will lead to many good topics. Your hobbies are a good place to start. Things like classic cars or crafts. Things that may be routine to you are totally foreign to many of us. If you do it for a living you are probably more knowledgeable than 95 percent of us on that topic.2

Think of things that you get asked questions about by friends and family. What do people call you for advice on? That would be a great place to brainstorm. Do you get called for cooking tips? Are you the neighborhood backyard mechanic? Maybe you have a great marriage and your friend ask you for relationship advice. Anything people turn to you to pick your brain is a viable topic. Does this count as an example?
;)
*Of course if you’re so smart you can’t pick just one, I’ll accept lists**.

A Great Thanksgiving

You read it right, and I’m not crazy. You see, we came to a fun decision today in the SGS household. MK’s favorite holiday meal is pretty much always a carb filled Thanksgiving – turkey, potatoes, stuffing, rolls. We don’t vary it. So today at our Thanksgiving style Easter dinner, we realized Easter has a lot to do with Thanksgiving – and that we would love to give thanks for all our blessings all the time.

We have so much to be thankful for, Thanksgiving is going to be more frequent around here. We’re going to have a big sit down dinner focused on thankfulness once a month. It might be the only time I’m allowed all those goodies! :)

How hilarious and cool will we be if we have kids? “Mom, can I go to the SGS house this week for dinner?” “Why?” “It’s Thanksgiving.” “No, it’s June.” “They have Thanksgiving once a month!”

But it’s not about being cool, or the food, I promise. It’s a little more making sure we connect. With just the two of us, and both of us trying to not be all about food all the time, dinners have gotten smaller, less formal, and more just to refuel. We think a little more ceremony will be fun.

SomeGoSoftly hopes you all had an amazing Easter and joy filled weekend!

Something Needs To Happen

This nothing happening week is killing me.

fives.jpg#89

Five things I’m wasting time with since the internet is so slow:

  1. Celebrity photos and gossip.
  2. Eating too much.
  3. Bothering MK.
  4. Making lists that I look at later and throw away.
  5. Painting my nails over and over.

Fun While It Lasted

We went out for a few runs yesterday, but it was just too warm. Skiing on warm snow is akin to a bagel in a small toaster - you’re trying to make it work but it’s fighting you. Okay, that wasn’t really funny, but I’m trying to cheer myself up here. Skiing for the winter is essentially over. We’re going to try to stop out there Saturday, and the resort closes on Sunday.

I know some of you (CH!) couldn’t be more happy to not have to hear about skiing for a while – but I don’t think I overdid it. I told you about the company and the good times. I told you about me getting better. It’s been a crazy fun six months, as always it just flew by. I’m going to miss the B’s, SB is the cutest thing I know.

I’m happy and sad to be going. We have two weeks to pack. I hate packing. I’m pretty sure my laundry room is in my living room – going to an apartment from this monster house is going to be a new and tough adjustment. MK is going to love being on the beach, I’m glad for that. And hopefully the B’s will plan a visit so I don’t get too sad missing them.

Who else is coming? :)
